Adebisi Akande, Chairman of the University of Ibadan (UI) Governing Council, has instructed the university to allocate any allowances due to him to students studying science courses.
In a letter to the UI Registrar, Ganiyu Oke, dated August 21, 2024, Akande requested that his remuneration be converted into scholarships for students in the Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology departments.
Akande, who is also the former Governor of Osun State, emphasised his decision not to receive any personal allowances for his role as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council. The octogenarian described his appointment as a “national call to service.”
“If the position is entitled to any allowances, such as for attending meetings of the Governing Council and its committees, you would be kind enough to apply any payments due to me solely for the benefit of deserving undergraduate students of this University who are studying science courses, namely in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology only,” he wrote.
Akande proposed that the allowances be used to establish an endowment for annual scholarships or awards covering accommodation and other fees charged by the university for deserving science students.
He also assured that in case his allowances are discontinued for any reason, the Adebisi Akande Foundation, established for similar purposes, would cover any shortfall to ensure the continuation of support for the students.
Akande was appointed as the Pro-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan by President Bola Tinubu on June 15, 2024.
