President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has removed the vice-chancellors of the University of Abuja (now renamed Yakubu Gowon University) and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) in a major shake-up of leadership at federal universities.
University of Abuja (Yakubu Gowon University)
- Prof. Aisha Sani Maikudi Removed as Vice-Chancellor
- Prof. Patricia Manko Lar Appointed as Acting Vice-Chancellor for six months (ineligible to contest for the substantive position)
University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN)
- Prof. Polycarp Emeka Chigbu Removed before completing his tenure as Acting Vice-Chancellor
- Prof. Oguejiofu T. Ujam Appointed as Acting Vice-Chancellor for six months (also ineligible for the permanent position)
Reasons for the Changes
The presidency did not provide specific reasons for the sackings, but the move is seen as part of a broader leadership restructuring to enhance governance and academic excellence in Nigerian universities.
The new acting vice-chancellors are expected to oversee transitional leadership, with the process of appointing substantive VCs likely to commence soon.
Broader Implications
The sudden removals signal the government’s increased scrutiny of university management and its commitment to reforms in the education sector. The decision has sparked reactions within the academic community, with some describing it as a bold move to improve university governance.
The new vice-chancellors will face the challenge of stabilizing their institutions and implementing government policies aimed at strengthening higher education in Nigeria.
