Three lecturers from the University of Lagos (UNILAG) have been named the first recipients of the Sahara Making a Difference (MAD) Grant, a funding initiative aimed at supporting student-focused academic work.
The announcement was made during the university’s 55th Convocation Ceremonies, held from Tuesday, January 13, to Thursday, January 17, 2025. The grant, established by Sahara Group—one of Nigeria’s leading international energy and infrastructure conglomerates—awards $36,000 annually, with each recipient receiving $12,000. The fund will be managed with a focus on outcome-based achievements under UNILAG’s supervision.
The grant recipients are:
- Dr. Gbeminiyi Sobamowo – An Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering. His research focuses on Energy Systems Modelling, Simulations, and Design. Through his Hezer Research Group, comprising faculty members and students, he has developed several innovative energy solutions that have gained industry uptake.
- Dr. Ayodele Ibrahim Shittu – A Senior Lecturer in the Department of Economics, Faculty of Social Sciences. He currently leads the Office of Career Development Services (OCDS) and previously served as Deputy Director of the Entrepreneurship and Skills Development Centre (ESDC). Dr. Shittu specializes in Development Economics, focusing on Entrepreneurship and Innovation. His student research support initiatives have produced two winners of the 2024 Grooming Grant for outstanding project writing in Entrepreneurship Economics and Rural Financing.
- Dr. Peter Nogichukwuka Amah – A Senior Lecturer in the Department of Finance and the Acting Director of the UNILAG Simulation and Training Centre. As a mentor of The Investment Society (TIS), he has guided over 80 students to secure internships and jobs at leading global firms such as Bank of America/Merrill Lynch and Goldman Sachs. His mentorship has also led UNILAG student teams to win various international competitions, including the CFA Ethics and Equity Research competitions.
The Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS, extended her heartfelt congratulations to the grant recipients on behalf of the Senate, staff, and students, commending their dedication to enhancing student learning and research.
