The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has revealed that a polytechnic in Nigeria’s Southeast, despite having only 30 students, has been receiving billions of naira annually in intervention funds.

Executive Secretary of TETFund, Sonny Echono, disclosed this startling detail on Monday during a strategic interactive workshop for heads of institutions, bursars, and procurement officers of TETFund-supported institutions held in Abuja.

Describing the situation as both “shocking and embarrassing,” Echono said the unnamed polytechnic was established four years ago and has consistently received full annual allocations despite its tiny student population.

“I was so embarrassed when it was brought to my attention that a particular polytechnic in the South East that has been there for four years has only 30 students,” he said. “Yet they have been accessing all their annual disbursements.”

Echono added that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is already investigating the matter.

He expressed concern about the integrity and effectiveness of the fund’s disbursements, warning that institutions failing to meet enrollment, fund utilization, or academic performance benchmarks risk being delisted as TETFund beneficiaries.

“This is not about punishment but ensuring funds are used effectively,” he stressed.

Echono also announced that over N70 billion has been allocated this year to provide solar and hybrid power systems in beneficiary institutions as part of TETFund’s efforts to support sustainable infrastructure development.

He was joined at the event by representatives from the National Universities Commission (NUC), National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), and National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), all of whom commended TETFund’s role in transforming Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.

According to The Guardian, polytechnics typically receive about N1.165 billion annually from TETFund, comprising N1.015 billion in direct disbursements and N150 million for zonal interventions.
