A Nigerian teacher has raised concerns over the mental and emotional toll on students after one of his pupils went without food for 48 hours due to her poor performance in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). Obanuso Temitope Obanuso, a coach for UTME students, shared the alarming incident in a Facebook post, highlighting the intense frustration of students who felt let down by their results.
The student, a female candidate, had reportedly studied diligently for months, and was confident of scoring high in the examination. However, when her result was released, she scored far lower than expected, triggering a sense of hopelessness. In the post, Obanuso shared that the student, who had previously achieved scores close to 300 in mock exams, refused to eat for two days and even pleaded for her result to be reviewed. She expressed that if the review showed her score was still under 300, she should be penalized for what she considered a failure of her own.
“I have 6 students who scored close to 300 last year, being sent results below 160. These students are serious and brilliant students. They gave their best. One of them, has not eaten for 48 hours. She has been pleading with me to help contact JAMB that if they check her work and finds her score less than 300, she should be penalised because she knew what she did,” Obanuso wrote.
The teacher’s post has sparked discussions among parents and students alike, many of whom are also expressing dissatisfaction with the results of their children. Obanuso added that he had received numerous messages from concerned parents, who are equally frustrated by the significant discrepancies in students’ results.
“I have dozens of parents and students in my DM. They are helpless. How do you explain students dropping from 270 or 280 in 2024 to 123 and 132 in 2025? Everyone is thinking the mass failure is due to unseriousness. It is a lie. Nigerian students are brilliant,” Obanuso continued. He argued that Nigerian students are just as serious and hardworking as their peers in other countries, stressing that the issue was not one of a lack of effort.
The teacher further pointed out the increasing global presence of social media and distractions but maintained that Nigerian students are excelling in international exams and contests, showcasing their potential. “Are students more serious in Europe and America? In which nation of the world are social media and phone fondling not prevalent among young people? Go and see our students’ performance in international exams and contests. It is not everyone who is unserious. Many of these students are more serious than those young adults criticising them.”
The post has resonated with many Nigerians on social media, including Omolola Prosper, who commented, “I think there’s a whole lot of mess with JAMB this year…How to get justice yen na ni Koko bayi cos this our Nigeria ehn..” While others, like Simeon Olukunle, echoed concerns, stating, “Until Nigeria happens to you, you will think other people complaining are lazy and against the sitting government. Like we all know JAMB being an agency of government will always win, when I heard about the results initially and people blaming poor reading culture all I did was laugh.”
The incident sheds light on the growing discontent with JAMB’s results and raises questions about the credibility of the examination system, as well as the emotional toll on students who dedicate themselves to studying for the UTME. Many are calling for further investigation into the results to ensure fairness and transparency in the examination process.
