Rivers State University (RSU) on Thursday, January 15, 2026, inducted 27 newly qualified medical doctors at the 2nd Induction Ceremony of the College of Medical Sciences, reaffirming the institution’s steady rise as a centre of excellence in medical education.

The Rivers State Commissioner for Health and Special Guest of Honour, Dr Adaeze Chidinma Oreh, described the induction as a strategic boost to the state’s healthcare system, noting that government investment in the College is targeted at producing doctors who will emerge as public health leaders. She urged the inductees to be the human face of healthcare in Rivers State, contribute to reducing maternal mortality, and strengthen primary healthcare delivery.

The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Hon. Okey Wali, SAN, represented by Emeritus Prof. Joseph Ajienka, expressed the Governing Council’s pride in the University’s progress, charging the new doctors to complement government-provided infrastructure with strong character, patriotism and professional integrity.

In his address, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Zeb-Obipi, described the ceremony as a major milestone in his first year in office. He highlighted RSU’s intervention in supporting Nigerian medical students displaced by the Ukraine crisis and attributed the University’s expanded admission quota to academic rigour and transparent assessment processes. He urged the inductees to remain worthy ambassadors of Rivers State University.

Earlier, the Provost of the College of Medical Sciences, Prof. Kenneth Shelu Ordu, reflected on the College’s growth from a single faculty to three faculties with over 570 staff members. He commended the Visitor to the University and Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, for sustained support that increased the College’s admission quota from 50 to 300 students.

The ceremony featured a valedictory address by the overall best graduating doctor, Dr Obu Kingdom Lawrence, and the decoration of a former Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Blessing C. Didia, as Medical Elder.
