The House of Representatives has passed a bill seeking to establish a Federal University of Technology in Badagry, Lagos State, marking a significant step towards expanding tertiary education access in the region.

The bill, introduced by Hon. Sesi Oluwaseun Whingan, the Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Petroleum Resources and representative of the Badagry Federal Constituency, scaled its third reading during a plenary session on May 6, 2025. It now moves to the Senate for concurrence.

The proposed institution aims to reduce pressure on existing universities and offer more academic opportunities to students in Badagry and neighbouring communities.

Presenting the bill, the Majority Leader, Rep. Julius Ihonvbere, noted that the initiative would support national development through technological education. Hon. James Faleke, who also backed the bill, emphasized the urgency of building more local universities to curb the growing trend of Nigerian students seeking higher education abroad.

Hon. Whingan, in his remarks, expressed gratitude to his colleagues for their overwhelming support. He described the bill’s progress as a long-awaited milestone for the people of Badagry.

“This is a bold step toward making quality technological education accessible to our youth,” he said. “The university will empower future generations to pursue academic excellence without leaving their region.”
