Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu has fulfilled her pledge to donate 50 buses and 30 tricycles to the institution.
It is believed that this move is to improve transportation and ease mobility challenges on campus.
The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has commended Tinubu while confirm receipt of the vehicles.
It described the gesture as a significant intervention in student welfare, noting that the vehicles have already been deployed for use within the campus.
In a statement issued by the institution’s spokesperson, Abiodun Olarewaju, the management said the donation reflects Mrs Tinubu’s enduring commitment to education and student well-being, particularly as an alumna of the university.
“The management of Obafemi Awolowo University wishes to inform the university community, particularly our dear students, of the successful receipt of 50 buses and 30 tricycles graciously donated by the First Lady,” the statement read.
It added that the donation is expected to significantly ease transportation difficulties faced by students and staff, enhancing movement across the expansive campus.
The university further described the gesture as “a classic demonstration” of the First Lady’s dedication to the welfare and overall well-being of students, emphasising that the intervention aligns with broader efforts to improve learning conditions in Nigerian universities.
OAU also acknowledged the role of the Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, the Ooni of Ife, in facilitating the delivery of the vehicles to the institution.
While confirming that the buses and tricycles are already in operation, the management appealed to students and members of the university community for patience as the system is being fully optimised.
“While the deployment and full operation of the buses and tricycles have commenced, the management appeals to our students and the entire university community to bear with us regarding any perceived inadequacies in the current operations,” the statement added.
The development highlights growing involvement of high-profile Nigerians in supporting tertiary education infrastructure, particularly in areas that directly impact student experience such as transportation, accommodation, and learning resources.
