The police in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have arrested a 400-level private and property law student of the University of Abuja over the alleged rape of a 21-year-old 100-level student.
The suspect, identified as Goodluck Monday, was apprehended following the incident, which reportedly occurred after he met the victim at the office of the Dean of Student Affairs.
A colleague of the victim told PUNCH that the suspect allegedly introduced himself as the chairman of the institution’s NELFUND committee when they first met. The victim had reportedly approached him regarding issues related to a friend’s NELFUND application, after which they exchanged telephone numbers.
According to the source, the suspect later arranged a meeting with the victim and asked her to choose a location between Giri and Gwagwalada. She opted for Giri, reportedly unaware that it was his residence.
The source alleged that the victim followed the suspect and another individual into the house but later attempted to leave. However, she was allegedly prevented from doing so.
“She said she was terrified. He showed her an identity card, claiming he was a responsible person, and assured her that she would not be harmed,” the source said.
The situation reportedly escalated when the suspect allegedly made inappropriate advances towards the victim, which she resisted.
According to the account, the suspect later assaulted her despite her attempts to resist and call for help.
The Law Students’ Association of Nigeria, University of Abuja chapter, in a memorandum dated 28 March 2026, confirmed that it had taken cognisance of the allegation involving one of its members. The association said it had contacted the complainant, who agreed to submit a written report to aid its investigation.
Another student disclosed that the suspect was arrested in the early hours of Monday by police officers from the Gwagwalada Division, adding that the development had eased tension on campus.
“The suspect was arrested early on Monday. There had been growing concerns and similar allegations circulating among students prior to his arrest,” the source said.
In a voice note allegedly sent to the victim after the incident, the suspect denied wrongdoing and questioned why his telephone number had been shared with individuals who threatened him.
He also suggested in another message that the allegation might be connected to his political ambitions.
When contacted, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, confirmed the arrest and said investigations into the matter were ongoing.
