Senator Adams Oshiomhole (APC/Edo North) has raised questions over the financial activities of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in 2024, during the agency’s 2025 budget defence session at the National Assembly Joint Committee on Finance.
Oshiomhole expressed concerns about the N850 million spent by JAMB on security, cleaning, and fumigation in 2024, questioning the purpose of the expenditure. “What did you fumigate? Is it mosquitoes that took all this money?” he asked.
The senator also criticized the agency for spending N1.1 billion on meals and refreshments and N600 million on local travel, calling the expenditures excessive. He remarked, “You are spending the money you generate from poor students, many of them orphans. Are you being freely fed by the government?”
JAMB’s Financial Report
In response, JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, revealed that the agency remitted N4 billion to the Consolidated Revenue Fund in 2024 while receiving a N6 billion grant from the Federal Government.
This disclosure prompted further scrutiny from lawmakers, including the Chairman of the House Committee on Finance, Abiodun Faleke, who questioned why JAMB, as a revenue-generating and self-sustaining agency, should rely on federal allocations. “You remitted N4bn and got N6bn from the Federal Government. Why not keep the N4bn and we stop the government from funding JAMB?” Faleke asked.
Potential Budget Adjustments
The legislators hinted at the possibility of eliminating JAMB’s allocation in future budgets unless the agency provides convincing justifications for its continued reliance on federal funding.
The session underscored the need for accountability and prudent financial management within government agencies, particularly those generating significant revenue.
