Former Governor of Niger State, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, has stated that no state in Northern Nigeria has up to 50% qualified teachers in its education sector.

Aliyu made the assertion while speaking at the 22nd Daily Trust Dialogue, themed “Food Security: Availability or Affordability,” held at the NAF Conference Centre, Abuja, on Thursday.

Highlighting the critical role of education in national development, Aliyu urged the Ministry of Livestock to collaborate with universities of education and agriculture to train farmers and improve literacy levels across the region.

“In the northern states, there is no state with 50% qualified teachers. Even among those who are currently attending school, the quality of education remains a concern, not to mention those who are unable to access education at all,” Aliyu said.

He stressed the need to leverage the expertise of federal universities of agriculture and education to enhance learning outcomes and develop skilled individuals who are passionate about their fields.

Aliyu also criticized the Nigerian government’s decision to close its borders, arguing that it has done little to curb the movement of goods to other ECOWAS nations.

“What is the importance of closing borders? Despite the closure, Nigerian goods still find their way into markets across West Africa. In countries like Niger, cows are still cheaper than in Nigeria, even with inflation. We need to focus on the right policies and ensure education is prioritized,” he added.

Aliyu’s remarks have further highlighted the ongoing challenges in the education sector in Northern Nigeria, with stakeholders continuously calling for reforms to improve teacher quality and access to education.
