Nigerian higher institutions win N750 million JAMB compliance prize

Seven Nigerian tertiary institutions have been awarded a total of N750 million by the Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB) for their compliance with admission guidelines.

The awards were presented during the National Tertiary Admissions Performance Merit Award (NATAP-M) ceremony, which took place after the 2024 policy meeting on admissions into tertiary institutions in Abuja on Thursday.

The award, initiated in 2018, recognizes institutions that adhere to JAMB’s admission guidelines, fostering healthy competition.

According to JAMB Registrar Is-haq Oloyede, the award encourages institutions to maintain high compliance standards. JAMB’s Director of Admissions, Mohammed Babaji, noted significant improvements in compliance since the inception of the incentive.

Categories and Winners

The awards were divided into four categories: three sectoral awards for polytechnics, colleges of education, and innovation enterprise institutions (IEI), and one overall winner category.

  • Overall Winner: University of Ilorin, Kwara State (N500 million)
  • Second Place: Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State (N75 million)
  • Third Place: Borno State University, Maiduguri, Borno State (N25 million)

Sectoral Awards:

  • Best Polytechnic: Kaduna Polytechnic, Kaduna, Kaduna State (N50 million)
  • Best College of Education: Federal College of Education, Zaria, Kaduna State (N50 million)
  • Best IEI: Pefti Film Institute, Lagos, Lagos State (N10 million)

Runners-Up (Non-Cash Awards):

  • Polytechnics: Nigerian Navy School of Health Science, Offa, Kwara State; Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic, Eruwa, Oyo State
  • Colleges of Education: Federal College of Education (Special), Oyo, Oyo State; Federal College of Education (Tech), Gombe, Gombe State
  • IEIs: Industrial Training Fund Models Skills Training Centre, Maitama, Abuja; Global Maritime Academy, Ogoni-Olomu, Ughelli South, Delta State

Criteria for Awards

Institutions were ranked based on:

  • Compliance with policy guidelines
  • Number of candidates subscribed
  • Number of admitted international students
  • Improvement in gender balance
  • National distribution of admitted students

The awards encourage institutions to aim for excellence in admissions and maintain high standards, promoting an equitable and effective higher education system in Nigeria.
