The Niger State Government has ordered the immediate closure of all public and private primary and secondary schools across the state following the abduction of pupils at St. Mary’s Catholic School, Papiri, in Agwara Local Government Area.

Governor Umaru Bago announced the directive on Saturday after a security meeting with heads of security agencies, according to a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim.

The governor said the shutdown also affects missionary schools, Islamic schools, and federal government colleges, noting that all will remain closed until further notice.

He further ordered the closure of all tertiary institutions in Niger North Senatorial District as well as others located in vulnerable areas of Niger East, citing the rising threats to students and school communities.

Bago described the abduction as “sad and unfortunate,” assuring the public that all relevant security formations—including the Department of State Services (DSS) and the police—are working to ensure the safe return of the kidnapped pupils and other victims.

He explained that the exact number of abducted children has not yet been established, as security agencies are currently conducting a headcount.

The governor called on security agencies, civil society organisations, organised labour, and religious leaders to devote full attention to the rescue efforts, stressing that the government remains committed to safeguarding lives and property.

The development comes amid rising attacks on schools in the country. On Friday, Katsina and Plateau states also ordered the closure of schools following renewed banditry targeting educational institutions.

Similarly, the Federal Government directed the immediate shutdown of all 47 Unity Colleges nationwide in a circular issued on Friday, citing “recent security challenges in some parts of the country and the need to prevent any security breaches”
