Literacy day: Nasarawa emphasises reading culture

As the world marks the International Literacy Day, Nasarawa State government has admonished students in the state to improve on their reading and writing skills.

Speaking at the ceremony on Wednesday in Lafia, Senior Special Assistant to Governor Abdullahi Sule on Human Capital Development, Mrs Habiba Balarabe-Suleiman, said that the state government organised the event to celebrate primary and secondary school students who were making efforts to improve on their skills.

Balarabe-Suleiman while Inaugurating a ‘Read and Tell’ club at the event which will be replacated in all primary and secondary schools in the state, said that the initiative would ensure that students speak English language fluently in order to break all barriers that may hinder their educational pursuit.

She said that the education sector in the state was allocated more than 30 per cent of the state’s 2021 budget in line with UNESCO’s recommendation because the state government was determined to ensure that its citizens were well educated.

“The ‘Read and Tell’ club initiative will go a long way to assist the students and improve their performances in national examinations such as NECO, JAMB among others,” the SSA added.

Also speaking, wife of the Deputy Governor of the state, Mrs Sheila Tosan-Akabe lauded the initiative and encouraged the students from the schools invited to take their studies seriously in order to achieve their dreams and set goals.

The event featured reading of books and articles by Six primary and 13 secondary schools across the 13 Local Government Areas of the state.
