A level 100 student at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), has tragically died by suicide, sparking widespread grief and conversation about student mental health and emotional resilience.
The student reportedly took his own life on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, after an alleged emotional breakdown. Eyewitness accounts claim the young man became devastated after stumbling upon his girlfriend in a compromising situation with another individual at GUSSS Hall One—a student hostel on campus.
It is believed that the emotional trauma from this discovery may have contributed to his decision to end his life by hanging. His lifeless body was found later that day, and officers from the Winneba Police Division promptly retrieved it for further investigation.
Girlfriend Denies Cheating Allegations
In a significant development, the girlfriend at the centre of the scandal has denied all allegations of infidelity. In a public statement, she expressed sorrow over the student’s death and urged the public to refrain from spreading misinformation.
She maintained that the widely circulated story does not represent the full truth of the situation and appealed for privacy and sensitivity as those affected process the loss. Her response comes amid intense social media backlash and media scrutiny, further compounding the emotional toll of the incident.
Ongoing Police Investigation
Authorities have confirmed that investigations into the incident are ongoing. While the identity of the deceased has not yet been officially released, police say they are working to ascertain the exact circumstances that led to the student’s death. The student’s body remains in custody pending further examination and family notification.
Expert Reaction and Mental Health Warning
In the wake of the tragedy, clinical psychologist Bernard Owusu has cautioned the public and school authorities about the emotional and psychological pressures faced by students in tertiary institutions.
Speaking to GhanaWeb, Owusu warned against drawing hasty conclusions from single events. “Suicide often results from accumulated emotional trauma, not just one incident,” he said. “Breakups or rumours may trigger the final action, but the roots go deeper.”
He urged universities to strengthen mental health and counselling services and ensure students have access to safe, non-judgmental spaces to talk about their struggles.
Campus Response and Calls for Support
The UEW community has been left in mourning, with many calling for urgent reforms to prioritise students’ emotional wellbeing. Students and staff have begun demanding greater access to mental health resources and increased sensitivity in how institutions handle such emotionally charged incidents.
As the investigation continues and the community grieves, this incident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of mental health awareness, emotional support systems, and responsible reporting during moments of crisis.
