A 400-level medical student of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, Muili Abdulbasit Opeyemi, has won a highly competitive international travel grant to present his research at a major global medical education conference in Doha, Qatar.
Abdulbasit, a student in the Department of Medicine, received the Low- and Middle-Income Country Award (LMICA) travel grant to attend the Medical Education and Technology Conference (METC) organised by Weill Cornell Medicine. The grant followed a rigorous abstract review and competitive selection process, with only two recipients chosen worldwide, highlighting the quality and global relevance of his research.
At the conference, Abdulbasit presented a paper titled “Global Trends and Outcomes of Virtual Reality and Physical Simulation in Neurosurgical Education: A Systematic Review.” The study examines worldwide evidence on the use of virtual reality and simulation-based training in neurosurgical education, emphasising their impact on surgical skills acquisition and professional competency.
As the lead researcher, Abdulbasit coordinated a research team that qualitatively synthesised data from studies across different regions of the world to assess how emerging technologies are reshaping neurosurgical training and medical education more broadly.
Describing the grant as a major milestone, Abdulbasit said the opportunity represents both a recognition of academic dedication and a platform to amplify the contributions of young African researchers in global medical education discussions.
The achievement underscores LAUTECH’s growing research capacity and serves as an inspiration to students to pursue excellence, innovation and impactful scientific inquiry on the global stage.
