The crisis rocking Lagos State University (LASU) has escalated, with the university Senate suspending all academic and socio-academic activities, including the 2024/2025 second semester examinations, until further notice.
The decision was announced following a virtual Senate meeting held on Saturday, August 2, 2025, in response to the indefinite strike action declared by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the university’s staff unions. The striking unions include ASUU-LASU, SSANU-LASU, NASU-LASU, and NAAT-LASU.
According to a statement issued by Mrs Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile, Deputy Registrar and Coordinator of the Centre for Information and Public Relations, the Senate clarified that the industrial action is directed at the Lagos State Government and not the university management.
“The core demands of the Joint Action Committee are directed at the Lagos State Government,” the statement quoted the Vice-Chancellor and Senate Chairperson, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, as saying.
The Senate further revealed that the university management had actively worked behind the scenes to resolve the impasse, facilitating dialogue between the unions and the State Government. A high-level meeting chaired by the Lagos State Head of Service, Mr Olabode Agoro, was held on Friday, August 1, with representatives from the university unions, management, and key ministries. Another round of consultations is expected on Thursday, August 7.
In light of the prevailing tension and uncertainty, the Senate resolved to suspend all activities, including the much-anticipated second semester examinations originally scheduled to begin on Monday, August 4.
“All academic and socio-academic activities are hereby suspended. The 2024/2025 Second Semester Examinations are postponed until further notice,” the Senate stated.
Additionally, all students residing in the university’s hostels across the Ojo, LASUCOM (Ikeja), Epe, and Badagry campuses were directed to vacate the premises by 6:00 a.m. on Monday, August 4, 2025.
The Senate urged members of the university community, especially students, to remain calm and law-abiding during the period of disruption.
