LASU don among 18 academics awarded $250k SGCI research grants

Dr. Olusegun O. Babalola, a senior lecturer in the Department of Zoology, Faculty of Science at Lagos State University (LASU), is one of eighteen academics from Nigerian tertiary institutions awarded a $250,000 grant from the Science Granting Councils Initiative (SGCI).

The grant, facilitated through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund)’s Research for Impact Initiative (R4I), aims to develop four prototype projects into commercially viable products.

Grant and Prototypes Development

The academics, grouped into four teams, were hosted at Innov8, an innovation hub in Abuja, to develop prototypes addressing various challenges. These include;

  1. Development of Technology to Mitigate the Effect of Drought in Desert Areas of Northern Nigeria
  2. Development of Automated Garri Frying Technology (Jollyfryer)
  3. Creation of Biosensor Device for Water Purification Using Solar Energy
  4. AirVolt: Affordable Access to Electricity with Vertical Axis Wind Turbines

Dr. Babalola’s Project and Team

Dr. Babalola’s research team, focusing on a Water Purification System with Biosensor using Solar Energy, includes:

  • Prof. Nwaugo Victor (Abia State University)
  • Prof. Chiaghanam Osita (Rivers State University)
  • Dr. Usman Wasiri (Bauchi State University)
  • Dr. Olusegun O. Babalola (LASU)

Each group, including Dr. Babalola’s, received $50,000 (N60 million) to execute their research proposal.

About the SGCI

The Science Granting Councils Initiative (SGCI) is a multi-funded initiative aimed at enhancing the capacities of 17 Science Granting Councils (SGCs) in sub-Saharan Africa, contributing significantly to strengthening national research and innovation ecosystems.

Dr. Babalola expressed gratitude to LASU Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello for nominating him for the TETFund Scientific and Innovative Research Workshop in 2023.

This workshop provided the opportunity for collaboration, leading to the successful grant proposal.
