Lagos teacher who assaulted 3-year-old pupil granted bail

A teacher at Christ Mitot School in Ikorodu, Lagos, Stella Nwadigbo, has pleaded not guilty to charges of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm after she was caught on camera allegedly assaulting a three-year-old pupil.

Nwadigbo was arraigned before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, January 9, 2025. The Lagos State Police Command, represented by Prosecutor ASP Raji Akeem, accused her of slapping and hitting the pupil while teaching him to write numerals on January 7.

ASP Akeem stated that the alleged offences violated Sections 135 and 172 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Presiding over the case, Chief Magistrate O. Kushanu granted the defendant bail in the sum of ₦200,000, with two sureties in like amount.

The court set February 18, 2025, as the date for further mention of the case.

The incident, captured on video and widely shared on social media, has drawn significant public outcry, with many calling for justice and better child protection measures.
