Lagos State Senior Model College Meiran and New Era Girls Junior Secondary School Surulere have emerged victorious at the World Robot Olympiad (WRO) finals for junior and senior secondary schools, held in Lagos. These schools will represent Nigeria at the global WRO event scheduled in Izmir, Turkey, in November.
The competition saw participation from 50 schools, with the top two demonstrating exceptional skills in robot building and creativity. In addition to trophies, these schools earned the honor to compete on the international stage.
Commending the participants, Lagos State’s Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, emphasized the importance of early-stage science education. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to investing in education and modern technology, aligning with Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ Agenda.
Mr. Alli-Balogun lauded the teachers who also served as coaches and acknowledged the students’ ingenuity displayed throughout the competition. He assured that the state plans to increase the availability of computers in public schools, promoting digital learning and skills development.
Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Eniola Opeyemi, encouraged students to enhance their critical thinking and problem-solving skills using robots. He praised Governor Sanwo-Olu for fostering technological exploration among students at an early age.
The WRO competition, organized annually by the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, aims to boost students’ interest in technology and robotics through practical demonstrations. This year’s theme, “Earth Allies,” tasked school teams with exploring how nature and natural events impact us through robotics.
