The Lagos State Government has shut down Smiley Kids Montessori, a school in Sangotedo, following the tragic death of a two-year-old pupil, Ela Ogbodu.
Ela’s mother, Rapheala Ogbodu, took to social media on January 15 to demand answers, alleging that while the school reported her daughter had drowned in the school’s swimming pool, she suspected electrocution and a cover-up attempt by placing the child’s body in the pool.
In response, officials from the Lagos State Safety Commission, the Office of Education Quality Assurance, and the Ministry of Education conducted a preliminary investigation at the school to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.
A statement from the Lagos State Safety Commission confirmed the closure of the school, stating that it would remain sealed pending further investigation. “The State Government extends its deepest condolences to the family of the victim and reiterates its commitment to preventing such incidents in the future,” the statement read.
Director-General of the Safety Commission, Lanre Mojola, emphasized the importance of adherence to safety regulations by school owners and caregivers to prevent similar tragedies. He assured the public that more details would be provided upon the conclusion of the investigation.
The incident has sparked widespread concern, with calls for stricter enforcement of safety standards in schools across the state.
