The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment towards continuous capacity building programmes for teachers with the aim of enlightening them on the use of instructional materials, improving service delivery and productivity of teachers in the classroom.
Disclosing this at the closing ceremony of a weeklong Audio-Visual Capacity Building Programme for Public School Teachers held at the Education Resource Centre, Ojodu, Honourable Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folasade Adefisayo revealed that the present administration has initiated various training programmes periodically to train teachers for better delivery in the classrooms adding that this will greatly improve the performances of students.
The Commissioner who was represented by the Director, Public-Private Partnership, Mr Adeyemi Adebayo stated that the theme of the workshop “Equipping the 21st Century Teachers for Effective Classroom Delivery” is apt as there is need to upscale the teachers in line with global trends and new methods of delivering various subjects in the classrooms.
While speaking the commissioner highlighted that the programme has exposed teachers to adopting and utilizing instructional strategy, materials and teaching techniques in the 21st century classroom, blended learning, effective use of Casio calculator for improved student performance in mathematics and science subjects among other factors in the teaching field.
She highlighted frantic efforts by the government in specific areas ranging from recruitment and capacity building programme for teachers, staff welfare and infrastructure provision/renovations across all public schools among others.
In her words, “With the Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s administration, education is taking a different dimension and all is being done through huge investments to ensure teaching and learning is improved on, our students are doing exceptionally well and our teachers are exposed to best practices for positive results in our schools”.
She concluded by encouraging the teachers to maximise the use of instructional materials in teaching their various subjects which will aid better understanding of the students and classroom fun emphasising that they play a critical role in cascading knowledge and must not rest on their oars in ensuring the standard is better in their respective schools.
The Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Abosede Adelaja delivering her welcome address examined that the training had participants from several schools across the six education districts with active participation, brainstorming of participants on improving learning outcomes and various group task to engaged participants during the workshop.
Director, Education Resource Centre, Mrs Omolayo Akinlade representing the Permanent Secretary averred that participants will be presented with certificates of participation and advised them to train other teachers in their respective schools on what they learnt in course of the programme.
Highlights of the closing ceremony were various presentation by the teachers from the respective districts showcasing the instructional materials they produced in course of the programme for different subjects.
