A Higher National Diploma (HND) student of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, Adekanye Ayomide Elizabeth, has taken to social media to raise alarm over a sudden directive that compels her and other students to abandon their Journalism and Media Studies programme midway and switch to Strategic Communication.

Elizabeth, in a widely shared Facebook post on Monday, expressed deep frustration over the development, describing it as unfair and a product of “departmental politics” that could derail their academic and career paths.

According to her, the affected students had already completed their first semester, purchased textbooks, taken lectures, and written exams, only to be informed of the course change without proper explanation or recourse.

“We chose Journalism because we believe in the power of storytelling, of truth, of the media,” she wrote. “Now, because of manipulation and departmental politics, our futures are being tampered with.”

Elizabeth pleaded with the Kwara Polytechnic management, the Ministry of Education, the press, and the public to intervene.

“We did everything right. Why should we suffer for following due academic procedures?” she questioned. “We still want to remain in Journalism and Media Studies. We don’t want to be merged into Strategic Communication.”

She called on the institution to pursue full accreditation for the Journalism and Media Studies programme rather than compelling students to migrate to a different specialisation.

All efforts to get official comments from the institution’s management and the leadership of the Mass Communication Department proved abortive as of the time of filing this report.

The post has since sparked widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians expressing sympathy for the students and urging the school authorities to provide clarity and a fair resolution.

Stakeholders in education and media advocacy have also begun to weigh in on the matter, calling for transparency and student-focused reforms within Nigeria’s polytechnic system.
