The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Emeritus Is-haq Oloyede, has urged students to manage their time wisely, describing time as one of life’s most limited yet valuable resources.

Prof. Oloyede gave the charge on Tuesday, April 23, during the maiden matriculation ceremony of the African School of Economics (ASE), Abuja.

Addressing the pioneer students of the Pan-African university, he said, “Economics is about maximizing the utilisation of the limited. As students, you must learn to value and properly utilise limited opportunities, especially time.”

He noted that the relatively small size of the institution would give students a unique advantage in accessing learning opportunities that may be limited in large institutions.

In a keynote lecture titled “Education: The Pathway to Success in Life,” ASE’s Board of Trustees Chairman, Prof. Michael Maduagwu, described education as the foundation for personal and societal development. He advised students to read widely, make the best of the digital age, and maintain integrity, warning against vices such as exam malpractice, cultism, and sexual harassment.

Also speaking, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mahfouz Adedimeji, in his address “Three Principles, Six Stories,” outlined the university’s mission to transform Africa through functional education built on the values of Integrity, Discipline, Excellence, Accountability, and Service (IDEAS). He encouraged the students to be driven by curiosity, resilience, and focus.

“Ultimately,” he said, “remember that you are part of a legacy of excellence, a tradition of innovation, and a commitment to making the world a better place.”

The ceremony also featured remarks from the university’s founder, Prof. Leonard Wantchecon, and guests from the Citizenship and Leadership Training Centre and the African Aviation and Aerospace University.

The highlight of the occasion was the administration of the matriculation oath by the Vice-Chancellor, officially inducting the students into the university community.
