In a heartwarming gesture that blended leadership with legacy, Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, returned to the classroom on Friday, teaching pupils in a local school as part of his administration’s renewed focus on basic education.
A video shared on the governor’s official Facebook page showed him energetically delivering a lesson on drugs, writing the word “Drugs” on a chalkboard and engaging students in a lively back-and-forth. The clip, which has since gone viral, was captioned “Once a teacher, always a teacher.”
The impromptu teaching session came on the heels of several education-focused initiatives rolled out by the Aiyedatiwa administration. In March 2025, the governor approved the recruitment of 1,100 new primary school teachers across all 18 local government areas of the state. This effort, supported by the 2023/2024 UBEC/SUBEB intervention programme, is aimed at tackling staffing shortages and improving foundational learning.
Further emphasizing his administration’s educational strides, Governor Aiyedatiwa noted that the state has launched a large-scale distribution of learning materials, including textbooks, Android tablets, sports equipment, and modern classroom furniture.

“Today, we took a significant stride toward a brighter future for our children,” the governor wrote. “This initiative underscores our unwavering commitment to quality education for every child, regardless of background.”
He highlighted the scope of the government’s intervention:
- Over 75,000 textbooks and digital learning tools distributed
- Ongoing classroom construction and rehabilitation in more than 100 schools
- 2,100+ new teachers recruited, trained, and deployed
- Enhanced support for sports and extracurricular activities
According to him, these efforts are part of a broader strategy to prepare Ondo children for a fast-evolving global landscape. “With every book, tablet, and sports kit, we are investing in the leaders of tomorrow,” he said.
The governor’s symbolic return to the classroom has drawn praise from across the state and beyond, with many citizens lauding the move as a refreshing display of humility and focus on education.
