President Bola Tinubu has directed the Ministers of Finance, Wale Edun, and Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, to develop modalities for the payment of four months’ withheld salaries to university non-teaching staff. This decision follows complaints by organized labor regarding the forceful stoppage of their peaceful protest over the withheld salaries by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command’s police.

The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) revealed this development after a closed-door meeting between President Tinubu and organized labor representatives.

Tinubu Approves New Minimum Wage

In a related development, President Bola Tinubu has approved a N70,000 minimum wage for Nigerian workers, with a commitment to review the national minimum wage law every three years. This announcement came during a meeting with leaders of the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

A statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, indicated that the President also promised to assist the private sector and sub-national entities in paying the new minimum wage.

The labor leaders commended President Tinubu for his responsive leadership and his discretionary powers to address the demands of university unions for their unpaid salaries.
