The Federal Government has launched the Nigeria National Laureate Annual Prize Programme aimed at rewarding outstanding academic research and innovation in tertiary institutions.
The Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Olatunji Alausa, said the initiative is designed to promote scholarly excellence and position research as a key driver of national development.
According to the minister, the programme will offer cash prizes of N5 million for the best undergraduate dissertations, N10 million for master’s theses, and N20 million for doctoral research, alongside national recognition for recipients.
Alausa noted that the initiative seeks to reposition academic work as a valuable national asset, while encouraging innovation and intellectual contributions among students.
The programme will be funded by the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank (NERD) in collaboration with its partners.
To oversee its implementation, a 10-member committee chaired by Professor Abubakar Sambo has been constituted. The committee will be responsible for managing submissions, evaluation, and the selection process.
Tertiary institutions across the country have been directed to nominate outstanding research works, while the committee may also independently identify exceptional entries.
The 2026 edition of the programme is scheduled to commence with a call for submissions in May. This will be followed by an evaluation phase from June to September, culminating in a National Laureate Gala to be held in November 2026 in Abuja.
