The Federal Government has officially launched the Tertiary Institution Staff Support Fund (TISSF), a welfare-driven loan scheme offering up to ₦10 million to eligible academic and non-academic staff in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
Unveiled during a stakeholder engagement session in Abuja, the scheme is aimed at promoting financial stability, enhancing quality of life, and supporting professional development for personnel in universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday by Folasade Boriowo, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education.
According to the statement, each qualified staff member can access up to ₦10 million in loans — capped at 33.3% of their gross annual salary — to be used for essential needs such as transportation, healthcare, or small-scale business ventures like poultry farming.
Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa, described the initiative as part of a broader national strategy to revitalise tertiary education under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“TISSF is not just about welfare. It is about empowerment,” Dr. Alausa stated. “We are ensuring that our education workforce is supported to live well, grow professionally, and continue contributing meaningfully to institutional excellence.”
The scheme will be implemented in partnership with the Bank of Industry (BOI), which will handle the disbursement process to guarantee transparency and accountability.
Stakeholders present at the launch — including the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Student Engagement, the Executive Secretary of TETFund, the Managing Director of BOI, and several Vice Chancellors, Rectors, and Provosts — lauded the scheme as a timely intervention to boost morale and productivity within the tertiary education system.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to working with all relevant bodies to ensure effective execution of TISSF and foster a more resilient, motivated, and empowered educational workforce nationwide.
