FG appoints heads for NCCE, two new tertiary institutions

The Federal Government has appointed principal officers for newly established federal tertiary institutions as well as the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE).

The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, announced the appointments in a statement issued on Thursday by the Director of Press and Public Relations in the ministry, Boriowo Folasade.

He announced the appointment of Dr Angela Ajala as the Executive Secretary of the NCCE.

According to the statement, the appointments include leadership for the Federal University of Science and Technology, Epe, Lagos State, and the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal Polytechnic, Abuja.

Alausa also formally inaugurated the new leaders at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s higher education system.

According to the statement, Professor Adeola Oshikoya was appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Science and Technology, Epe, Lagos State.

Professor Nosiru Onibon was named the pioneer Rector of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal Polytechnic, Abuja.

The minister said the development reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to expanding access to quality tertiary education, strengthening teacher education, and positioning Nigerian institutions as centres of innovation and research.

He explained that the newly established institutions were strategically created to address national and global challenges such as food security, climate change, renewable energy, and technological innovation.

Alausa urged the new leadership of the National Commission for Colleges of Education to strengthen governance across Nigerian colleges of education and promote high academic standards within the country’s teacher education system.

He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening institutional leadership, improving governance frameworks, and advancing policies that enhance the quality and global competitiveness of Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.

Approval of ₦2 billion takeoff grant for new tertiary institutions

During the inauguration ceremony in Abuja, the minister also disclosed that the Federal Government approved ₦2 billion each as take-off grants for the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal Polytechnic, Abuja, and the Federal University of Science and Technology, Epe, Lagos State.

According to Alausa, the grants are intended to support the early operations of the two institutions, particularly in establishing basic administrative and academic structures as they commence activities.

He said the newly created institutions form part of the government’s strategy to expand access to higher education and strengthen Nigeria’s capacity in science, technology and innovation.

“Every child in this country deserves access to the highest quality education comparable to global standards,” the minister said.

Alausa noted that the appointees were carefully selected based on their records of service and achievements across Nigeria’s educational institutions.

“To whom much is given, much is expected. You have been chosen from millions of Nigerians to serve your country, and this recognition extends to your families as well,” he said.

The minister added that the administration of President Bola Tinubu is focused on building a stronger education system capable of producing the skilled manpower required for national development.

He also explained that the Federal University of Science and Technology in Epe and the polytechnic in Abuja were strategically located to harness the economic potential and human resources available in the two regions.

According to him, the institutions are expected to focus on areas such as technological innovation, renewable energy, climate change response, disaster risk management, and other research fields relevant to national development.

Alausa further congratulated Dr Angela Ajala on her appointment as Executive Secretary of the NCCE, stressing that strengthening teacher education remains critical to the development of Nigeria’s education system.
