Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has announced the recruitment of 500 new teachers as part of his administration’s efforts to boost the state’s education system and reduce classroom burden.
Speaking during the 2025 Workers’ Day celebration at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City on Thursday, the governor also revealed plans to regularise over 3,000 casual teachers whose contributions he described as vital to the future of Edo children.
Okpebholo emphasised that education remains a top priority under his leadership and assured that more reforms are underway to improve teaching and learning outcomes across the state.
New minimum wage and other labour efforts
Okpebholo also announced a new minimum wage of ₦75,000 for workers in the state, up from the previously approved ₦70,000.
He said the wage increase is aimed at improving the living conditions of workers and reflects his administration’s commitment to the welfare of the state’s workforce.
He noted that upon assuming office, over 1,000 casual workers, including cleaners without job security, were absorbed into the civil service and granted full employment status.
In the health sector, Okpebholo stated that 450 clinical and non-clinical personnel have been employed across state hospitals. In addition, 126 contract staff at the Edo State Specialist Hospital have been offered more secure appointments to ensure stability and efficiency in service delivery.
The Workers’ Day celebration served as a platform for the governor to highlight his administration’s early achievements in employment regularisation, education reform, and healthcare staffing—key pillars in his broader agenda to improve governance and quality of life in Edo State.
