The Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, has announced that four million out-of-school children have been reintegrated into classrooms through the Federal Government’s DOTS initiative.

DOTS stands for Data Repository, Out-of-School Children Education, Teacher Training & Development, and Skill Development & Acquisition.

In June, the Ministry had reported that over two million children had returned to school under this program. Speaking at the 2nd International Conference of Kwara State Universities (KU8+), Professor Mamman updated this figure to four million, emphasizing the impact of the DOTS initiative.

His speech was delivered by Acting NUC Executive Secretary, Ambassador Chris Maiyaki.

While highlighting the progress made, Professor Mamman noted that more efforts are needed, especially given the recent 10-day protests that underscored ongoing challenges.

He stressed the importance of continuing efforts to reintegrate children still roaming the streets back into the education system.

Professor Mamman also underscored the vital role of universities in national and industrial development, lamenting the limited cooperation between tertiary institutions and industries in Nigeria.

He pointed out that this lack of collaboration is one reason the country has lagged behind nations like Malaysia, Brazil, and Indonesia in development.

In his remarks, Professor Noah Yusuf, Vice-Chancellor of Al-Hikmah University, called for stronger partnerships between universities and industries to leverage collective strengths for sustainable development.

This event highlights ongoing efforts to address the issue of out-of-school children in Nigeria and the need for further collaboration between educational institutions and industries to foster national development.
