The Governing Council of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS), has appointed Professor Bashir Garba as the new substantive Vice-Chancellor of the institution.

His appointment follows the council’s approval in its previous 167th meeting, where Professor Muhammad Mahuta, a scholar in the Sociology of Education, was named Acting Vice-Chancellor pending the selection of a substantive vice-chancellor.

Background
The appointment of acting vice-chancellors by the Nigerian government in May was part of a broader directive aimed at ensuring the continuity of university administration following the expiration of tenures of outgoing vice-chancellors.
The directive required outgoing VCs to nominate one of their deputies to serve as acting vice-chancellor until a substantive successor was appointed.
This measure came in response to unrest at the University of Abuja, where the process of appointing a new vice-chancellor was disrupted due to the absence of a governing council.
