Awka — The Anambra State Government has suspended the headteachers of nine public primary and secondary schools for two weeks following extremely low pupil and student attendance on Monday, despite the state’s directive abolishing sit-at-home school closures.
The suspension was announced by the Chairman of the Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB), Dr Vera Nwadinobi, during an on-the-spot assessment visit to affected schools across several local government areas.
According to Nwadinobi, the monitoring exercise was part of statewide compliance checks with Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s Executive Order mandating the reopening of schools on Mondays.
She expressed disappointment that while teachers were present, pupils and students were largely absent.
Findings from the inspection revealed alarming turnout figures. At Union Primary School, Ukpo (Dunukofia LGA), only three pupils were present, while Walter Eze Secondary School, Ukpo recorded zero attendance. Aguoji Primary School, Ifitedunu had five pupils, Hilltop Primary School, Ifitedunu had three, and Chukwurah Primary School, Abatete recorded none.
Similarly, Uzubi Primary School, Eziowelle had only two pupils; Union Primary School, Eziowelle had three; Umunebo Primary School, Nteje recorded none; and Central School, Atani also had no pupils present.
“Following these findings, Mr Governor has approved the suspension of the headteachers of the affected schools for two weeks,” Nwadinobi said.
She added that the affected officers have been directed to hand over to their next most senior colleagues to ensure continuity of school administration.
The ASUBEB chair explained that the action reflects the government’s zero tolerance for negligence and its determination to restore discipline, accountability and full academic engagement in public schools.
It will be recalled that the Anambra State Government recently issued an Executive Order formally abolishing Monday school closures linked to sit-at-home directives. The government also warned that any teacher or non-teaching staff who fails to comply risks losing up to 100 per cent of their salary.
The latest suspensions underscore the state’s resolve to enforce the policy and safeguard uninterrupted learning for children across Anambra.
