A lecturer in the Department of English and Literary Studies at the Federal University Wukari, Abdussalam Amoo, has successfully completed his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree at the University of Ibadan.

Amoo, whose research focuses on sociolinguistics, onomastics and linguistic landscape studies, concluded his doctoral programme after successfully defending his thesis at the premier university’s Department of English.

His doctoral research titled, “Language Choice and Attitude in the Linguistic Landscape of Lagos State, Nigeria” further consolidates his scholarly contributions to the study of language in society, particularly in the areas of language use in public spaces, identity construction and pragmatic meaning-making within multilingual contexts.

Colleagues and associates have described the academic milestone as a testament to discipline, intellectual rigour and commitment to scholarship, noting that completing a PhD at the University of Ibadan demands resilience, originality and sustained research engagement.

Amoo is also the publisher of EduCeleb.com and host of The Education Podcast, platforms through which he has consistently contributed to national conversations on education policy, public examinations, language matters and institutional development.

Speaking after the successful completion of the programme, he expressed gratitude for mentorship, institutional support and divine grace that sustained the academic journey.

He also paid glowing tribute to his doctoral supervisor, Prof Adesina Sunday, describing him as “an energetic, meticulous and deeply committed scholar whose dedication to excellence continues to inspire.”

“Prof Sunday exemplifies what true academic mentorship should be. He is rigorous and disciplined, yet profoundly supportive. His insistence on global standards, structured timelines and intellectual depth shaped my own academic philosophy. He does not merely supervise; he builds scholars.”

He further acknowledged the academic ecosystem at the UI, noting that the institution’s structured research culture and adherence to timelines made degree completion within three academic sessions achievable in line with global best practices.

“The University of Ibadan operates a system that rewards diligence and clarity of purpose. The institutional framework from postgraduate regulations to supervisory monitoring ensures that if a candidate is focused and guided properly, completion within three academic sessions is normal, as is the practice globally.”

He also expressed deep appreciation to the examiners for their rigorous evaluation and constructive feedback, noting that their scholarly engagement significantly strengthened and reshaped the thesis during the defence.

The external examiner was Professor Ibrahim Olaosun of Obafemi Awolowo University, while the internal examiner was Dr Clement Odoje of the Department of Linguistics, University of Ibadan.
