Alarming statistics from the Federal University Dutse (FUD) reveal that 70% of students in the Department of Mathematics have a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of less than 2.5, placing them in the third class category.
This troubling figure has led to the department being colloquially labelled as the “centre of carryovers” due to the high number of students needing to repeat courses.
Dr. Umar Abdullahi, Head of the Department of Mathematics, expressed his concerns: “These statistics are troubling and indicate a need for a thorough review of our teaching methods, curriculum, and student support systems. We must ensure that our students are adequately prepared and supported to succeed in their studies.”
Several factors have been identified as potential contributors to this high rate of low CGPAs among mathematics students, including teaching methods, curriculum issues, and inadequate student support.
The university administration is taking steps to address the issue.
A task force has been established to investigate the root causes of the high rate of low CGPAs and to develop a comprehensive action plan to support students.
This plan may include curriculum adjustments, enhanced tutoring programmes, and workshops aimed at improving study skills and exam preparation.
Students are encouraged to utilize available resources and seek help when needed.
Recommended strategies include joining peer study groups, consulting with professors, and using academic support centers.
Student leaders have also taken notice of the issue.
Fatima Sani, President of the Student Union Government (SUG), emphasized the need for collaboration between students and faculty: “It’s crucial that we work together to create an environment where students can thrive academically. We must address the challenges head-on and provide the necessary support to our peers.”
As FUD works to improve academic outcomes in the Department of Mathematics, the broader academic community will be observing closely.
The hope is that with targeted interventions and collaborative efforts, the department can shed its reputation as the “center of carryovers” and become a model of academic excellence.
