WASSCE 2024 Candidates Performance

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced a significant drop in student performance in the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) compared to the previous year.

According to Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut, the Head of Nigeria National Office (HNO) of WAEC, only 72.12% of candidates who sat for the exam in 2024 obtained credit passes in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics. This represents a decrease of 7.69% from the 79.81% recorded in 2023.

In his official statement on Monday, Dr Dangut detailed that 1,805,216 candidates participated in the 2024 examination, out of which 1,301,941 managed to secure the critical five-credit requirement, including passes in English and Mathematics.

He noted, “This year’s result shows a decline in performance, with only 72.12% of the candidates meeting the benchmark, compared to 79.81% in 2023.”

Despite the drop in overall performance, the press release also highlighted progress in reducing examination malpractice.

WAEC reported a 4.37% reduction in cases of malpractice, down from 16.29% in 2023 to 11.92% in 2024.

Dr. Dangut attributed this improvement to the Council’s ongoing efforts to uphold the integrity of the examination process.

He remarked, “We have recorded a commendable reduction in malpractice, particularly in cases involving the use of cell phones and organized cheating within some schools.”

Dr. Dangut emphasized the importance of these efforts, stating, “The Council is committed to ensuring that our examinations remain credible and that the results truly reflect the abilities of the candidates.”

He also assured the public that WAEC will continue to innovate and implement stricter measures to combat cheating and improve the overall quality of its examinations.

As the 2024 results are analyzed, the focus will likely shift towards identifying the factors contributing to this decline and developing solutions to enhance student performance in future examinations.
