The West Africa Examinations Council (WAEC), has disclosed that the examination body would be reviewing its staff salary.
The WAEC Nigeria Head of National Office, Mr Olu Adenipekun said this is as a measure to motivate the workers towards optimal productivity.
Adenipekun made the statement at the 67th anniversary ceremony to mark the examination body’s establishment in Lokoja.
He noted that the management had set up a committee to review staff salary.
He said, “The report of the committee is being considered; we want better packages for our staff in spite of the council’s dwindling resources.
“Management believes that it is important to sustain an effective and efficient workforce through regular staff training and re-training.
“This will be vigorously pursued during this fiscal year.”
Adenipekun urged WAEC staff to be prudent in resources management, stressing that there was need to adopt strict fiscal discipline to avoid wastage.
He said, “We should embrace transparency and accountability in all our dealings. We must remember that the council has zero tolerance for corruption.”
He said that the council’s achievements over the years wouldn’t have been impossible without the cooperation and dedication of staff and other stakeholders.
At the occasion, Kogi Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mrs Rosemary Osikoya appreciated the cordial and transparent working relationship between WAEC and the state government.
She stressed the commitment of Gov. Yahaya Bello to reducing examination malpractice to its barest minimum in the state.
In her words, “In 2017, the state government de-recognized 47 secondary schools while 108 others were warned. In 2018, it de-recognized 13 schools and 56 were warned,”
She ascribed the improvement recorded in the 2018 WAEC examinations to the state government’s strict adherence to examination rules and regulations, and restated government’s commitment to restoring standard in its schools.
