The Senate of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has elected Professor Mathew Soji Ilori as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics and Research).
Ilori, who currently serves as Director of Academic Planning, emerged victorious at the statutory meeting of Senate held on Wednesday, 25 March 2026. He secured 192 votes, representing 91 per cent of the total votes cast, defeating Professor Michael Babatunde Adegbile of the Faculty of Architecture, who polled 19 votes (9 per cent).
His appointment is subject to ratification by the university’s Governing Council and is for a tenure of two years. It is scheduled to take effect from Friday, 27 March 2026.
A distinguished alumnus of UNILAG, Ilori obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology (Second Class Upper Division) in June 1984, a Master of Philosophy in Microbiology in November 1990, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Microbiology in November 1998.
He has held several key positions within the university, including Chairman of the Board of the Institute of Maritime Studies, Deputy Chairman of the Academic Programmes Committee of the School of Postgraduate Studies, and Dean of the Faculty of Science.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, on behalf of the Senate, management, staff and students of the university, congratulated Ilori on his election and wished him a successful tenure.
