The Senate of the University of Jos has elected Professor Pic Charles Onwochei of the Department of Religion and Philosophy as the institution’s new Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration).

His election took place during the Senate’s 4th Special Meeting for the 2024/2025 Academic Session, held on Tuesday, 18 November 2025.

Professor Onwochei’s appointment, which is for a renewable two-year term, takes effect immediately and is subject to ratification by the University’s Governing Council.

The meeting, chaired by the Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of Senate, followed the statutory procedures outlined in the University’s governing laws.

Two candidates—Professor Pic Charles Onwochei and Professor Ishmael Ogboru—were duly nominated by the Vice-Chancellor.

However, after their formal presentation, Professor Ogboru voluntarily withdrew from the race, resulting in the unanimous adoption of Professor Onwochei as the sole candidate.

A native of Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State, Professor Onwochei is a seasoned academic and renowned scholar of Religion and Philosophy, with a specialisation in Ethics and Philosophy.

Over the years, he has held several strategic academic and administrative positions, including Head of the Department of Religion and Philosophy and Director of the Directorate of Basic and Advanced Studies (DBAS), a role he occupied until his recent appointment. Professor Onwochei is married to Dr Modupe Onwochei.
