UI VC highlights richness in Yoruba language

Professor Kayode l Adebowale, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, has highlighted the depth and cultural richness of the Yoruba language during a courtesy visit from ten American students participating in the 2024 Yoruba Group Project Abroad (YGPA).

The YGPA programme, facilitated by the Yoruba Language Centre at the University of Ibadan and the Fulbright-Hays Yoruba Group Project Abroad, brought the students to Nigeria to immerse themselves in the Yoruba language and culture.

Adebowale expressed his delight at seeing the students learning to speak Yoruba.

He emphasised the University of Ibadan’s prestige as the foremost university in Nigeria and encouraged the tutors to provide the students with a thorough understanding of Yoruba, especially its proverbs and idiomatic expressions.

The Vice-Chancellor advised the Yoruba Language Centre to ensure the students explore Ibadan and its cultural heritage, urging the students to be patient as they acquire knowledge of the Yoruba language.

He also recommended that the students document their experiences and observations throughout their stay.

Professor Philip Adedotun Ogundeji, Director of the Yoruba Language Centre, mentioned that the students will undergo an eight-week acculturation program at the university. He noted that students from various global institutions visit the University of Ibadan annually for this programme.

Ogundeji explained that the students are accommodated with host families to help them become familiar with the Yoruba language and culture.

He expressed optimism that the students would gain proficiency in Yoruba by the end of the programme.
