
Governing Council and Key Officials Also Named for Ogoni-Based Institution
President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Professor Chinedu Mmom as the inaugural Vice-Chancellor of the newly established Federal University of Environment and Technology (FUET) in Ogoni, Rivers State.
The announcement was made in a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy. Alongside Mmom’s appointment, President Tinubu named Professor Don Mon Baridam as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the university’s Governing Council.
Governing Council and Key Appointments
The newly constituted Governing Council includes representatives from various regions:
- Emmanuel Onoja (North-Central)
- Hamid Adekunle (South-West)
- Chima Oji (South-East)
- Abdullahi Magaji Lamda (North-West)
Additionally, the president appointed Mpigi Monday Douglas (South-South) as Registrar, Zoryii Josco Nwaimanie (North-Central) as Bursar, and Saghanen Ntogo (South-South) as Librarian.
Background of Appointees
Professor Baridam, an expert in organisational behaviour and management, previously served as a lecturer at the University of Port Harcourt. Meanwhile, Professor Mmom, a distinguished scholar in Geography and Environmental Management at the same institution, once held the position of Rivers State Commissioner for Education.
Establishment of the University
The Federal University of Environment and Technology, Ogoni, was established in February 2024 after President Tinubu signed the bill into law. The institution is expected to play a pivotal role in advancing environmental justice and expanding higher education access in the Niger Delta region.

President Tinubu emphasized that the university’s creation aligns with his administration’s commitment to addressing ecological challenges while fostering academic excellence in underserved communities.
