The Joint Action Committee of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has announced an indefinite strike set to commence Sunday night, October 27, 2024. The decision follows the Federal Government’s inaction on meeting the unions’ demands.

In a joint statement issued Sunday, SSANU National President Mohammed Ibrahim and NASU General Secretary Prince Peters Adeyemi confirmed the strike, which centers on withheld salaries, unpaid earned allowances, improved remuneration, and the implementation of the 2009 agreements with the government. The ultimatum, given by the unions last week, is set to expire at midnight.

The statement, referencing an earlier notice issued on October 21, 2024, noted, “The ultimatum given to the Federal Government to address our demands for the release of outstanding four months’ salaries and the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on August 20, 2022, expires tonight.”

The unions’ grievances stem from the Federal Government’s invocation of the ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy during the prolonged 2022 strike involving university-based unions. Following several failed attempts at dialogue, SSANU and NASU expressed frustration at the government’s delay. “Despite numerous ultimatums, interactions, and assurances, the government has failed to address our legitimate demands,” the statement read.

Members nationwide have been directed to convene on their campuses on Monday, October 28, to formally begin the strike. “In view of this, we direct all our members in universities and inter-university centers to hold a joint congress on Monday and proceed on an indefinite, comprehensive, and total strike action with no concessions given,” the unions declared.

The unions also encouraged state-owned universities to include local demands relevant to their branches. Compliance with the directive, the statement concluded, is mandatory for all NASU and SSANU branches at both federal and state-owned institutions.
