The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has commended the management of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) on its handling of the sex-for-grade scandal involving one of its members, Richard Akindele and a student the school identified as Monica Osagie.

Chairperson of ASUU OAU chapter, Adeola Egbedokun said the decision to indefinitely suspend Professor Akindele was a step in the right direction as it would help restore sanity to the system.

EduCeleb.com recalls that the OAU management had on Thursday announced the suspension of Akindele after an investigative panel established a prima facie case against him relating to a leaked phone conversation between him and Ms Osagie. In the audio, he was heard demanding sex from the lady for five times before he could upgrade her score from 33 to a pass. The management therefore suspended him based on the panel’s report.

Dr Egbedokun added that the union remained committed to upholding the OAU code of conduct and enjoined lecturers to abide by the codes guiding their appointment.

The statement read as follows,

“The Obafemi Awolowo University Branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) commends the Administration for the step taken towards ensuring sanity in the system.

“Reacting to the release emanating from the office of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Eyitope Ogunbodede on Thursday, 19th April, 2018, where the VC announced the suspension of Professor Akindele, the union expresses satisfaction on the prompt action taken by the administration on the recommendation of the Investigative Panel set up to look into the events surrounding the recorded phone conversation between Professor Akindele and Miss Monica Osetobe OSAGIE where the former was demanding for sex to alter the latter’s grade.

“ASUU OAU reiterates its commitment to defending the integrity of the code of conduct of the University, and to upholding its ethical standards.

“ASUU OAU, therefore, encourages the Vice Chancellor and his team not to relent in their efforts to get to the root of the matter and ensure that justice is done and is seen to have been done in the matter. The union also admonishes its members to always adhere strictly to the code of conduct guiding their appointment in the University as they carry out their lawful activities.”
