A group of academic staff at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), operating under the banner of “Concerned Members of the Senate,” has called on Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, to urgently appoint a substantive Vice-Chancellor for the institution.
In a letter titled “Appeal for Restoration of Sanity in COOU” and made available to the media in Awka, the lecturers expressed dissatisfaction over the continued leadership of the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kate Omenugha, whose appointment began on December 5, 2023.
According to the group, Prof. Omenugha has exceeded the legally permissible duration for acting in the role and is also a contender for the substantive VC position — a situation they claim compromises the fairness of the selection process.
“She had continued to misuse the office and flout university regulations. This is an attempt to perpetuate herself in office,” the concerned professors stated.
They urged Governor Soludo to terminate her acting appointment, arguing that it undermines due process and the integrity of the selection process.
“The governor should terminate Prof. Omenugha’s Acting appointment as VC since she is interested in vying for the VC position,” they said.
The group appealed for adherence to university statutes and for a level playing field to be restored in the appointment of a new Vice-Chancellor.
The tenure of the university’s last substantive Vice-Chancellor expired on December 4, 2023, and the delay in appointing a replacement, according to the lecturers, is now creating instability and concerns about governance within the university.
