Renowned Professor of Islamic Studies and former Chief Imam of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Professor Murtala Aderemi Bidmos, has passed away.
He died in the afternoon of March 3, 2025, and will be laid to rest in his hometown, Ayete, Ibarapa North, in accordance with Islamic rites.
Professor Bidmos was a distinguished academic and religious leader, known for his significant contributions to Islamic studies and his unwavering commitment to the Muslim community.
His tenure as Chief Imam at UNILAG was marked by spiritual guidance and dedication to charitable causes, notably through his involvement with the IBILE Muslim Community Zakat and Sadaqat Foundation.
Born on June 18, 1948, Prof. Bidmos had a distinguished academic career. He earned a Bachelor of Arts with honors in Arabic Language and Literature from the University of Kuwait in 1977.
He furthered his education at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, where he obtained a Master of Arts and a Ph.D. in Arabic and Islamic Studies. In 2004, he received a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from the same institution.
Throughout his tenure at UNILAG, Professor Bidmos held several key administrative positions, including Acting Head of the Department of Arts and Social Sciences Education and Dean of the Faculty of Education.
Prof. Bidmos was appointed as a professor at UNILAG on June 8, 2006. His contributions to Islamic education were significant, including authoring “A Manual for the Teacher of Islamic Studies,” which serves as a valuable resource for educators in the field.
The don was a distinguished Fulbright Scholar, a testament to his outstanding academic contributions and international recognition in the field of Islamic Studies and Education. His Fulbright Fellowship provided him with the opportunity to engage in advanced research and collaboration with scholars globally, further enhancing his expertise in Islamic Curriculum Studies and Inter-religious Dialogue.
His scholarly work, “Inter-Religious Dialogue: The Nigerian Experience,” reflects his dedication to fostering understanding and unity among diverse religious communities.
In his final hours, Professor Bidmos remained devoted to his duties, engaging in discussions related to his charitable endeavours, exemplifying his lifelong dedication to service.
The Muslim community has been urged to pray for his soul, offer charity on his behalf, and seek Allah’s mercy upon him. Details of his Janazah (funeral prayers) will be announced in due course.
May Allah grant him eternal peace and admit him into Jannatul Firdaus.
