The academic community is in mourning following the tragic death of Professor Yusuf Saidu, a distinguished scholar from Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS).
Until his death, he was the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Development at UDUS.
Saidu was reportedly killed by bandits in an attack that occurred on June 24, 2024, on his way Kaduna from Sokoto.
According to local sources, he was traveling along the highway when his vehicle was ambushed by armed bandits. Eyewitnesses report that the assailants opened fire, resulting in the fatal shooting of Prof. Saidu.
The incident has left the nation in shock and raised concerns about the escalating insecurity in the region.
Prof. Saidu was a highly respected figure in the field of Nutritional Biochemistry at UDUS and beyond.
His academic contributions, particularly in the areas of oxidative stress, neuroprotection, and nutritional quality, have been widely recognized both nationally and internationally.
The Vice Chancellor of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Prof. L.S. Bilbis, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, stating, “Prof. Saidu was not only a brilliant mind but also a mentor and leader who inspired many. His untimely death is a significant loss to the university and the entire academic community.”
Authorities are reportedly currently investigating the incident, and efforts are underway to apprehend the perpetrators.
