Muslim students convene to address education challenges in Taraba State

The 5th State Higher Institutions Convention of Muslim Students (SHICOMS) concluded on August 25, 2024, at the Federal University Wukari with a renewed commitment to advancing education in Taraba State.

The three-day event, which brought together participants from various higher institutions across the state, focused on addressing key issues in the higher education sector and fostering collaboration among institutions.

It was organised by the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN), Taraba State Area Unit.

Focus on Education and Research Collaboration

The convention featured representatives from prominent institutions, including Peacock College of Education, Jalingo; College of Education, Zing; Taraba State College of Nursing Science, Jalingo; and the host, Federal University Wukari.

The participation of scholars, students, and administrators from these institutions underscored the collective dedication to improving the state’s education sector.

During the convention, participants engaged in discussions on various educational topics, including curriculum development, research methodologies, and the enhancement of campus infrastructure.

A highlight of the event was the exploration of health issues, specifically the prevalence of Hepatitis B and C in Taraba State. Presenters examined the causes, effects, and control measures necessary to curb these diseases, reflecting the convention’s broader focus on public health education.

Debates and Intellectual Engagement

In addition to formal presentations, the convention provided a platform for debates and intellectual engagement on pressing national issues.

One debate explored whether “protest” or “dialogue” is a more effective means of achieving goals, while another examined the actualization of a real democratic system in Nigeria.

These discussions allowed participants to delve into the intersections of education, governance, and civic engagement, highlighting the role of students in shaping the future of the nation.

A particularly notable event was the English debate between students from the College of Nursing and Midwifery, Jalingo, and Federal University Wukari.

The debate showcased the students’ linguistic skills and critical thinking abilities, earning praise for the quality of discourse and the demonstration of intellectual prowess.

Insightful Contributions from Experts

Mal. Sufyan Umar, a renowned scholar in the field of education, delivered the lead paper presentation on the theme: MSSN @70: The Evolution, Successes & Challenges of Taraba State Area Unit.

His presentation provided a comprehensive overview of the evolution of the MSSN in the state, highlighting its achievements and the challenges it faces.

His insights offered valuable guidance for institutions looking to enhance their MSSN activities and engage more effectively with the wider community.

Resolutions for a Better Educational Future

The convention culminated in the adoption of several resolutions aimed at improving the quality of education in Taraba State. The resolutions addressed key areas such as academic programme enhancement, research collaboration, and student engagement.

The MSSN Taraba State Area Unit commended the state government for its declaration of free education but urged continued efforts to ensure the provision of sound and quality education across the state.

Furthermore, the MSSN called on the Federal Government to take urgent steps to alleviate the country’s economic challenges, which are impacting the education sector.

In a show of solidarity, the MSSN Taraba State Area Unit expressed condolences to the Emirate of Gobir in Sokoto State and the broader Muslim community following the tragic killing of the Emir of Gobir. The Unit also urged Muslim youth to embrace peace and unity, denouncing all forms of violence.

Additionally, the MSSN called on the Taraba State Governor to implement urgent measures to combat the spread of viruses such as Hepatitis and HIV, citing the severe public health risks they pose.
