The Lagos State Executive Council has approved the conversion of Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) into a specialized medical university, to be named the University of Medicine and Health Sciences.

The decision was announced by Lagos State Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Tolani Sule, during a stakeholders’ meeting held at LASUCOM.

Sule stated that a draft law for the establishment of the new university has been prepared for submission to the Lagos State House of Assembly.

The institution, once approved, will be structured to leverage a network of clinical training facilities across Lagos, with LASUTH as the primary clinical training site.

“This administration will not back down on this upgrade,” said the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, reinforcing the government’s commitment to the project.

Prof. Abayomi also revealed that land has been allocated at Ketu-Ejirin in Epe for the main campus, which will house administrative buildings and basic medical science programs, while clinical training will occur at LASUTH and other designated facilities.

The innovative plan is designed to expand training capacity by utilizing existing clinical personnel and infrastructure at well-equipped general hospitals and selected private medical facilities across Lagos.

The new university is expected to train a significantly larger number of medical doctors and health professionals to address both state and national healthcare needs.

The Provost of LASUCOM, Prof. Abiodun Adewuya, expressed gratitude to the state government, affirming the college’s readiness for the transition.

“The government under the leadership of Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has shown beyond doubt its commitment to successfully transform LASUCOM into a full-fledged university,” he said.

This transformation aligns with Governor Sanwo-Olu’s early 2024 commitment to establish a medical university that addresses Lagos State’s medical infrastructure needs while countering the emigration of medical professionals abroad.

The university is projected to graduate about 1,500 doctors annually, setting a benchmark that other states might follow.
