Katsina govt sends 7,054 almajiri children back to origin states

The Katsina State Government has commenced repatriation of Almajiri students of Qur’an schools to their respective states.

The Committee Chairman on Identification and Collation of Qur’anic Schools Data, Mr Adamu-Karadua, made this known while handing over some Almajiri students from Kaduna State back to Kaduna Government at Funtua LGA of Katsina State on Wednesday.

The repatriation of the Almajiri students is in line with the agreement by the 19 Northern state governors the report said.

“The committee has identified 7,054 non-indigenous “Almajirai” pursuing Qur’anic education in various parts of Katsina State.

“They will be repatriated to their respective states in batches.” the chairman was quoted to have said.

Mr Adamu-Karadua said out of the 7,054 Almajiri students, 1400 are from Kaduna State and they have been studying in various parts of Katsina State. While 2,000 of the Almajiri students are from the neighbouring Niger Republic.

In response, the Kaduna State Commissioner for Human Services and Social Development, Hafsat Muhammad-Baba, thanked the Katsina State government for taking care of the children.

“The Kaduna State Child Welfare and Protection Law have made provisions for the protection of these children, while the government has provided adequate funding for child protection services.

“We will make sure that they are taken care of by their parents and enrolled into basic education system while pursuing their Qur’anic education.

“We are not banning Qur’anic education, we never did that.

“I assure you that we are ready to receive more and more children,” she said.
