A cloud of grief has descended on the Federal Polytechnic, Ede, Osun State, following the sudden death of Kolawole Zainab, a final-year student from the Department of Quantity Surveying.
Zainab, a mother of three, reportedly slumped while preparing for a scheduled first-semester examination on Wednesday. The incident occurred just minutes before the exam, which was set to commence by 12 noon.
Eyewitnesses said she was studying in anticipation of the paper when she suddenly collapsed. She was quickly rushed to the institution’s medical centre but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
A Higher National Diploma (HND I) student who spoke under the condition of anonymity described the atmosphere as sombre. “Her sudden death has thrown her classmates into mourning,” the student said. “Even though we’re not in the same department, many of us were deeply affected. I’m not sure if her department eventually went ahead with the exam.”
Zainab’s passing has sparked widespread sorrow among students and staff. Many took to social media and in-person forums to express their shock and sadness.
A lecturer in the institution, Mr David Olufunsho Fagboungbe, took to Facebook to mourn the student, writing:
Tears, agony and grief today as female HND QS student of Federal Polytechnics, Ede, and mother of 3 dies in the heat of ongoing first-semester examination.
At the time of this report, the polytechnic authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident. However, students are calling for a review of support structures to better cater to the health and wellbeing of learners, especially during the intense pressure of examination periods.
The cause of death remains unconfirmed.
